Thriving in Aged Care, Not Just Surviving
Are we thriving in aged care? How can we thrive within an industry of constant growth and change in aged care? For some, the question is, “how can we survive?”
I did a science degree, so I love to think of organisations as organisms. And yesterday at out company’s state-wide meeting, I explained our need to respond to the Aged Care Reform in terms of biology, under the heading “Thriving, Not Just Surviving”.
External changes are our greatest challenge because they constantly threaten our ‘survival’ as an organisation. However, it is adapting to these changes that causes us to develop (‘evolve’) as an organisation. ‘Thriving’ in this environment is the result of responding to these changes internally (organically)!
The two key changes that are shaping us today are the introduction of the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) on the 1 July 2015, and the new role of the My Aged Care (MAC) Gateway.
In a sense, Aged Care in Australia is changing shape around us, to reflect a future dominated by the demand for home care:
These changes are not only a chance, not only an opportunity, to grow as an organisation. In fact, this will only happen if we recognise that they signal an essential need for organisations such as ourselves to modify and re-shape what we do and how we do it. These changes represent, firstly, the imperative to develop and create new business models and processes that suit and will flourish in the new landscape.
Like the biological process of adaptation, managers of organisations call this process ‘business development’.
At Care Assess, we recognise that this is a time for internal reform. It is time for a few quantum leaps that re-act to the changed environment, such as new and modified business structures.
It’s not ‘out there’ where the change needs to occur; it’s ‘in here’! It’s not the ‘system’ or the ‘sector’ that needs to change shape; it is ‘us’ – we ourselves need to evolve to the shifting demand and needs of our clients and consumers.
And at Care Assess, we’re not resisting these challenges – we’re welcoming them! These are exciting times, because the need to adapt well is an invigorating time of joining closer together in a collaborative process to re-shape ourselves!
It’s not only fun – it’s rewarding; we are not just surviving, we are thriving within an industry of growth and change.
